Whether we are going to work, school or just having a day out with friends, we all have some sort of beauty routine that we conduct as soon as we wake up in the morning.
It may consist of something simple like a shower, moisturizer and some light makeup or it may be the whole nine-yards. Yet some of these cosmetic products could be doing us more harm than good.
Most of us (myself included) have purchased products that contain ingredients with such lengthy names that we can barely pronounce them, let alone know the effect that they have on our bodies.
However, what we don’t know, might be hurting us.
For example, here are some of the chemicals that are hidden in the products that we use on a daily basis.
Formaldehyde: while formaldehyde may be used to help prevent bacteria from growing in products such as a body washes, eye shadows and nail polishes, it can also be related to various cancers and can be harmful to our immune system.
Lead: this chemical is used to “improve” women’s lipstick and most toothpastes, however, lead has been proven to cause brain damage.
Sodium lauryl sulfate: while this chemical is most commonly found in face washes, shampoos and mascaras, this powerful substance can shut down our kidneys and respiratory functions.
After learning that I was exposing myself to these chemicals, I was in shock.
I thought, “If I would never allow myself to eat these chemicals, then why would I rub them into my pores from where they can travel into my bloodstream?”
For those who are now asking yourself the same question and would like to make a change in the products that they are putting on their body, my advice would be to use the same exact products…
… but with different ingredients.
Here are my top five vegan beauty product secrets that are not only great for body and health, but are also super affordable for everyday use.
Name: Zuzu Luxe (Oil-Free Liquid Foundation)
Why is it so great? If you’re a beauty junkie like me, you know that there is nothing more essential to your makeup routine than a good foundation. It literally sets the “foundation” for the rest of your makeup (eye shadow, lipstick, blush, etc.) The ZuZu Luxe foundation gives you great coverage while still feeling super light and looking completely natural. In addition, it is oil-free which is essential for preventing breakouts. It contains natural ingredients, such as aloe, which are great for calming and reducing redness in the skin. Lastly, it is also gluten free and completely mineral-based.

Name: Aztec or Indian Healing Clay
Why is it so great? After a month of using this product, I am finally ready to share my ultimate favorite beauty product, calcium bentonite clay. This product comes in powder form and I pour three teaspoons in a bowl and mix it with an equal amount of apple cider vinegar. Once the vinegar is mixed with the powder it is ready to be spread over the face area. Just minutes after the mask is on, the clay dries and starts cracking. If it is left on for about 15 minutes while the mask tightens the pores. After wiping off the mask, any red/brown marks will be reduced, pores will have shrunk, the skin is glowing and any forming blemishes will have been brought to the surface to be easily removed. This clay mask is truly healthy and healing which is why it is my top favorite vegan beauty must have.
